Your ATS Score vs. What a Recruiter Actually Reads

A 95% score and no callbacks is a common, confusing combination. What the score measures, what it can't, and what a recruiter reads first.

An ATS score answers one question: can a machine read this document and does it contain the words this job needs? It says nothing about whether the work described is impressive. Both gates are real, and they reward different things.

What the machine gate checks

  • Can every section be extracted and labelled correctly
  • Do the required skills and title appear at all
  • Does the computed years-of-experience clear the filter
  • Is the education requirement met

What the human gate checks

Recruiters in India typically handle 20–60 open roles at once. The first pass over a shortlisted resume takes a handful of seconds and answers four questions in this order:

  • Is this roughly the right level? — read from your last job title and years
  • Has this person done the specific thing we need? — read from your top two bullets
  • Is there evidence, or just claims? — read from numbers in those bullets
  • Any red flags? — unexplained gaps, six-month stints, a mismatch with the applied role

Why a high score can still fail

The commonest pattern we see: a resume scores 92% because it repeats the job description's vocabulary, but every bullet describes a responsibility rather than a result. 'Responsible for managing the payment gateway integration' contains the right keywords and tells a recruiter nothing about whether you were any good at it.

Rewrite it as what changed: 'Integrated Razorpay and UPI flows for 40,000 monthly transactions, cutting failed payments from 4.2% to 1.1%.' Same keywords, and now a reason to call.

Weak

Responsible for handling the recruitment process for the technology team.

Stronger

Closed 34 engineering roles in 11 months, cutting median time-to-hire from 54 to 31 days.

How to use the score properly

Treat the ATS score as a spell-checker, not a grade. Get it comfortably past the threshold, then stop optimising it and spend your remaining effort on evidence — numbers, scope, outcomes. That second half is what converts a shortlist into an interview.
