'The ATS' is not one system. Indian employers run at least six common ones, and they differ in what they parse well. Knowing which you're facing tells you what to check before you upload.
Naukri RMS and Naukri's recruiter search
For most mid-size Indian companies, the first filter isn't an ATS at all — it's a recruiter searching Naukri's database. That search runs against your Naukri profile, not your uploaded PDF, which is why a great resume and a stale profile still produces silence.
Practical implication: keep your profile's headline, key skills and current CTC fields current. They are the fields the search actually weighs.
Workday — used by large multinationals
Workday is the one that makes you re-enter your entire work history after uploading your resume. Its parser pre-fills those fields, and it is unforgiving about non-standard dates and merged title/company lines. Whatever it mis-fills, correct by hand — the typed fields, not your PDF, are what the recruiter filters on.
Taleo and SuccessFactors — legacy enterprise
Oracle Taleo and SAP SuccessFactors are the oldest systems still in wide use, common in banking, telecom and large IT services. They are the strictest about layout: two columns, tables and header-bar contact details fail here more often than anywhere else. If you're applying to a bank or a large services company, send the plainest version of your resume you have.
Greenhouse and Lever — startups and product companies
Both parse modern PDFs well, including moderate design. They also surface your answers to custom questions prominently, so those short free-text boxes on the application form get read — often before your resume. Don't paste one-word answers into them.
Darwinbox, Zoho Recruit and Keka — Indian HR suites
Increasingly common in Indian mid-market companies. Parsing quality is mixed, and several of them index the file name and the email body along with the attachment, so a descriptive file name genuinely helps here.
The version that works everywhere
Keep one 'portal-safe' master: single column, no header contact details, standard headings, consistent dates, real text links. Use it for every unknown portal. Keep your designed version for direct emails and your portfolio, where a human opens it first.
