A summary is the most valuable real estate on your resume and the most commonly wasted. Three lines that could sit on anyone's resume are worse than no summary at all, because they push your actual evidence below the fold.
The formula
Identity + strongest proof + direction. Three clauses, two sentences, no adjectives about your personality.
- Identity — role and years: 'Backend engineer with 6 years in payments'
- Proof — the single most impressive verifiable thing you've done
- Direction — what you want next, when it's not obvious
Experienced — technical
Results-oriented software professional with excellent communication skills seeking to leverage my expertise in a challenging role with a growth-oriented organisation.
Backend engineer with 6 years building payment systems in Python and Django. Rebuilt a settlement pipeline handling ₹40 crore/day and cut reconciliation time from 3 hours to 20 minutes. Looking for senior backend work on high-volume systems.
Experienced — non-technical
Dynamic and hardworking sales professional with a proven track record of success and excellent interpersonal skills.
Enterprise sales manager, 8 years in SaaS across West India. Closed ₹3.1 crore against a ₹2.6 crore target last year and rebuilt the SMB pipeline process now used by a 12-person team.
Fresher
A motivated fresher seeking an entry-level opportunity to utilise my skills and contribute to the organisation's growth.
Final-year CSE student (NIT Warangal, 2026). Built and deployed a hostel-mess ordering app used by 600 students; comfortable in React, Node and PostgreSQL. Looking for a full-stack role in Hyderabad or Bengaluru.
Career changer
Experienced professional looking to transition into data analytics with a passion for working with data.
Six years in retail supply-chain operations, now analysing the same problems in SQL and Power BI. Built a demand-forecast model for 40 SKUs during my last role that cut stockouts 18%. Moving into a full-time analyst role.
When to skip the summary entirely
If you can't write a specific one — no standout achievement yet, or you're applying to many different role types — leave it out and let your experience start at the top. An absent summary costs nothing; a generic one costs three lines and some credibility.
Words to delete on sight
Results-oriented, dynamic, self-motivated, hardworking, team player, go-getter, detail-oriented, passionate, synergy, out-of-the-box, proven track record, reputed organisation. Every one of these appears on thousands of resumes and proves nothing.
